Happy Birthday to my Best Friend!

Today is Aunt Jenny's birthday!

Happy Birthday Aunt Jenny!!

I have always believed that God brings the people into your life that you need.  God knew that I would never have a sister...instead, He gave me someone better.   One day almost 20 years ago, God gave me Jenny!

Jenny is my children's Godmother, my should to cry on, my first phone call when I need to talk to someone (other than Larry), my sounding board, my advice giver, someone who celebrates happy moments with me and grieves in sad moments, my number 2 on speed dial (number 1 is reserved for Larry), my favorite Target shopping buddy, the mother of three of my favorite kids in the world (besides my own), the person who I can be myself around, the person who loves me for me, the person who knows me better than most and most importantly, my best friend.

Jenny is intertwined in most of my childhood memories.  Meeting outside her house the summer we both turned 12 years old.  We shared countless hours on the phone.  We spent so much time at each other's house that we considered each set our second parents.  We had pool parties and sleepovers.   We learned how to drive together - me in my parent's Mitsubishi Eclipse and her in her dad's Izuzu Truck (both parents thought it was important to learn how to drive a manual car).  We watched as each other went through high school relationships and comforted each other when those relationships failed!  We went to homecoming and prom together.  We cheered each other on as we graduated high school.  And we watched as acceptance letters came in from different colleges.  We watched each other grow from little girls into young women.

Our friendship doesn't end with childhood memories and it didn't end with graduation from High School.  Today, Jenny is just as much a part of my every day life.  She is there for me on days that I am missing my parents - knowing that she doesn't need to say anything, just knowing that I need her to be there for me.  She flew to Alabama the day after Jaxon was born and watched with me as he lay in the NICU.  We talk or text daily.  She is involved in my life and the lives of my children.  They know her and they love her - something that is so precious and important to me.  We are navigating our lives through motherhood and adulthood...together!

And our future is already planned.  Girls trips to escape the stress of everyday life.  Laughing as our kids go to school, sharing our worries when they begin driving and watching with pride as they all graduate high school.

I am so thankful that God gave me this friendship.  I am glad that He knew that I would need someone like Jenny by my side, not just through the good times, but also through the bad times.  He knew that our lives would be rocky, but our friendship would help us through those difficult times.  He knew that our laughter would be great together and our memories would be treasured.  He knew that instead of giving me a sister, He would give me a best friend!  And for all of that, I thank Him!

Jenny - Happy 32nd Birthday!  We love you and we are so lucky you are in our lives!  Thank you for being a part of my past, my present and my futures.  Thank you for loving my boys just as much as I do. Thank you for giving me two beautiful nephews and one gorgeous niece!  Thank you for being there for me and for knowing me the way you do.  You are the best friend a girl could ask for :)

Happy Birthday, Larry!

Today was Larry's 29th Birthday!  One more year until the 30's...enjoy it, babe!

We decided to bring Larry lunch today and we surprised him (and his co-workers) with a YUMMY cookie cake!  We also stopped to bring him in balloons.  Alex insisted on the balloons.  Apparently it isn't an appropriate birthday without them :)

For dinner we went to a local mexican restaurant with Grandma Becky.  Becky inadvertently told them that it was Larry's birthday, so they brought out a sombrero, sang "Happy Birthday" in spanish and gave Larry a sundae.  I think he was slightly embarrassed, but he took it in stride since Alex was having such a good time!

We came back to the house after dinner to eat cake.  Alex had decided a few months ago that he wanted his Daddy to have a "Cars" party.  We got a "Cars" cake along with "Cars" plates and napkins.

It was so much fun to celebrate Larry.  He is wonderful husband and an amazing father.  He amazes me each day with his love for me and the boys.  He works hard, so I have the opportunity to stay at home. We are so lucky to have him and love him more than he will ever know!

Happy 29th Birthday, Larry!

Celebrating Grandpa Jim

Tonight, we celebrated Grandpa Jim.  Regardless of if he is in heaven or here on earth, it is important to me to celebrate him and the life that the lived.  My boys need to know him and need to celebrate him as well and this is a great way for them to do so.

We had a nice steak dinner (something my dad would have LOVED), ate cupcakes and sent balloons to heaven.

Happy Birthday, Grandpa Jim!

Just know that your life had a meaning.
Every life has a meaning,
whether it lasts one hundred years
or one hundred seconds.
Every life and every death
changes the world in its own way.

Today Grandpa Jim would have been 54!

We are celebrating the day as we do all his other birthdays.  Having cupcakes, singing "Happy Birthday" and sending balloons up to heaven.  This year instead of sending up three balloons, Grandpa Jim will be getting four.

Don't cry because it is over.
Smile because it happened.
~Dr. Seuss~

I miss my Dad everyday, but today it is especially hard.  Today is a difficult reminder that my Dad isn't here and I am not able to do all of the things I want to for him.  I want to be picking out the perfect birthday present for him, I want to be buying him a birthday cake and watching him blow out the candles with a grandson on each knee, I want to see his smile as he listens to Alex sing "Happy Birthday", but mostly I want him here so I can hug him, kiss his cheek and tell him how much I love him.

While both joy and sorrow are fleeting,
and often intertwined,
love has the power to overcome both.
And love can last forever.

As much as he loved being my Dad, he would have adored his role as Grandpa Jim.  I have no doubt that his two grandsons would have been the light of his life.  His office would have been decorated in pictures of the boys and he would have gone to work regularly telling everyone about Alex's latest antics.  Knowing all that he is missing is one of the hardest things for me.  I would give anything to see him with Alex and Jax.  I would give anything for them to know him!

Perhaps they are not stars in the sky,
but rather openings where our loved
ones shine down to let us know they are happy.
~Eskimo Legend~

My Dad was an amazing man.  He was so full of life and love.  He touched more lives that he ever realized while he was here.  He made everyone around him feel important, intelligent and valued.  He listened to people without judgment.  He cared about everyone, regardless of if he knew you an hour, a year or a lifetime.  I will never forget the days of the visitation and funeral and looking around and seeing how many people were there to honor him and my Mom - it was a true testament to the people that they were.

Grieve not, nor speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me
as if I were right there beside you.
~Isla Paschal Richardson~

Today, we will remember my Dad - not because he died, but because he lived and because he has created a beautiful legacy.  We will share stories with Alex and Jax, because he lives on through our stories and our memories.  We will celebrate this day because God created an incredible man and shared him with us for 48 wonderful years.  We will honor the life that he lived.

What the heart has once known,
it shall never forget.

Happy Birthday, Daddy!  I miss you more than I ever thought possible.  My heart aches knowing you won't be here on your special day.  But knowing that you are celebrating in heaven with Mom and so many others, eases the pain just a little bit.  Know that you are loved, missed and thought of not just today, but each and every day.  I love you!

To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.

Jaxon's BIRTHday and Meeting Big Brother

I finally downloaded some pictures off of our camera tonight!  We definitely did not take nearly as many with Jaxon's NICU stay, as we did with Alex.  I am sure that I will make up for all that in coming weeks :)

Here are a few pictures from Jaxon's BIRTHday and when Jaxon and Alex met for the first time (I will blog more about that later):

Jaxon Charles Cothren

Jaxon Charles Cothren was born on March 24, 2011 via c-section.  At birth he was 7 pounds 2 ounces and 19.5 inches long!

He had a rough start.  He was breathing too heavy and hard and had to spend the first few days of his life in the NICU with an IV attached to him.  It was so pitiful, but pales in comparison to what other parents of NICU patients are going through!  Since coming home, we found out his bilirubin count was a little too high, so he got spend a few days in the baby tanning bed to lower his bilirubin count.  Now he is perfect and healthy and we couldn't ask for a sweeter newborn!

He is beautiful in every way (of course, we are a little biased)!  He sleeps and eats like a champ and so far only cries if he is getting his diaper changed or getting a bath!

Alex is loving his title of "big brother" and is eager to help out with all of Baby Jax's needs :)  I think we will use this to our advantage as long as possible!!

Because his first few days were a little rough, we don't have as many pictures with Jaxon as we did with Alex.  When I was able to visit him in the NICU, getting pictures were not my first priority!  I promise to start working on that :)  The few that we have on our camera, I haven't had a chance to download yet.

Here are a few pictures from our cell phones of our new bundle of joy:

Birthday Celebration at School

Since Alex's birthday is Saturday, we decided to take cupcakes to his school friends on Thursday, October 14, 2010.

I brought in Publix cupcakes and all of the kids were very happy (and had quite the sugar high)!  His friends sang Alex "Happy Birthday" and surprisingly, he was a little intimidated being the center of attention!

Here are some cute pictures from Alex's birthday celebration at school:
