Bathtime
Alex had quite a bit of a fever tonight, so I went ahead and put him in a cool bath to try and control his temperature.

Sick, Sick Little Boy
For the past two days, Alex has been unusually grumpy and moody. He has also had some chest congestion and a deep cough.
We weren't too worried about it until last night, when he had a miserable night of sleep. I had to go in several times to rock him back to sleep and comfort him. Then when he woke up this morning - crying and telling us "ear hurt, kiss Momma" or "hurt ear, kiss Daddy"! It was pitiful. He was doing all he could to to stay awake, even though he wanted to go to sleep.
We called the doctor and they went ahead and told us to come in. We were supposed to be at the doctor for a 10:00 am appointment. At 11:00, I finally asked what was going on and why it was taking so long - apparently they lost our ticket (basically bad communication between the front and back office). Luckily for us, Alex was feeling so miserable and he slept during the wait - he was so pitiful:
Once we were taken back, the Nurse Practitioner looked Alex over. He did have a fever of 102, he did have a nasty cough and chest congestion (but luckily it hasn't spread to his lungs...YET) and he did have an ear infection. He got a prescription for an antibiotic and for a cough/congestion medicine. We were also told to alternate between tylenol and motrin every three hours.
Then on the way home from the doctor's office, Alex slept...AGAIN. He did eat a few bites of his burger and some french fries before nap. I was also able to get his medicines filled and get a dose in him before naptime. He slept like a champ during naptime. In fact, we even had to go and wake him up at 4:15 pm.
I do have to say amidst all of this, we are throughly enjoying the extra snuggle time. And we are quite please with ourselves that this is the first ear infection in 2.5 years of Alex's life :)
Please send some good thoughts for our little boy - we certainly can use them and we will certainly appreciate them!

Trip to the Walk-In Clinic
Alex has had a runny/stuffy nose and cough for about 10 days. He has had a fever on and off during this time, but the fever never went about 101 degrees and was always controlled with Tylenol.
I finally started to get worried when I heard the cough in his chest and heard him breathing a little harder than normal. We decided that it would probably be the best thing to take him into the Walk-In Clinic before the holiday and before traveling to Philadelphia for the weekend.
Fortunately, there was no one else at the Walk-In Clinic and we were taken care of and treated fairly quickly. I think we were in and out in about an hour - a miracle in itself! Luckily, Alex was looked over and we were given a diagnosis of an Upper Respiratory Infection, which is viral. Because it is viral, we were not given any antibiotics - they did however give us a great cough medicine for him! We were told to give him plenty of fluids (which we have been trying to do), run a humidifier in his room (which we had been doing for approximately 5 days prior to taking him in), a little extra rest (you try making Alex rest...ha ha), use Vicks Vaporub (been using that religiously for about 5 days as well) and give him his cough medicine. The doctor also gave us the okay to head to Philadelphia for the weekend!
Oh, while we were there, they weighed him and he weighs approximately 28 pounds! He returns to Dr. Whitaker on December 17 and we are anxious to get his exact weight, height and head measurement!

Sick Little Boy :(
Larry and I were able to have a “date night”, since Grandma Karen was nice enough to watch Alex for us! We decided that we had better take full advantage of it because once we move to Maryland, our schedule is not going to allow for too many date nights! We had a great dinner at Ruth’s Chris and went to see Marley and Me. It was nice to be able to out to dinner with each other and enjoy and nice, hot meal!
When we got home, Alex was sleeping. I bent down to kiss him and noticed that he felt warm. I am not usually got at feeling if he has a temperature, so I asked Grandma if she had a thermometer. She did and I took his temp underneath his arm and it was 101.8. I got him some Motrin, which really didn’t bring it down all that much.
The next day (Monday), he battled the fever all day. It would go up, I would give him Motrin and it would go down to about 100.8. I called our doctor and told the nurse about his fever, the fact that he was putting his hands in his mouth and tugging at his ear. My first thought was teething, but the nurse told me that was too high of a fever to just be from teething. GREAT!! She advised us that it would probably be best to take him to a local pediatrician to get him check out. After calling around, we discovered that the only place that took visitors and children as young as Alex was the After Hours Pediatric Care.
We got to the After Hours place right as it opened and we were third in line! They eventually took us back and weighed Alex. Once we got back in the room we told the nurse his symptoms and she took his temperature. She took it rectally (poor Alex) and it was 103.3! No wonder why he was sleepy and grumpy! Larry and I could not believe it was that high.
When the doctor came in, she listened to us explain his symptoms and she suspected that he had an ear infection. She looked in his ears and was amazed when she discovered NOTHING! She listened to his chest and it was clear. His throat was a bit irritated, but he was having a little drainage from his nose which could be the cause of an irritated throat. All in all, she could not find the root of his fever – he had nothing wrong with him that she could see. She told us that it was possibly the onset of an infection, but nothing that could be treated without any signs of illness. She told us to get Children’s Tylenol and treat the fever. We are to give him the Tylenol every 4 hours (even to wake him up during the night) and make him comfortable. She also told us to follow up with our doctor if he wasn’t better in 3 to 5 days – luckily, we have an appointment set up with Dr. Whitaker on December 31.
It is so sad to see Alex not feeling well. He is definitely not acting like his normal, happy self when he is feverish. I am glad that nothing is seriously wrong with him – the worst really does go through your head when you see your child have a fever that high!
